How to use the Palette Generator

Each generation algorithm rotates and shifts your base color on the color wheel to produce colors that relate to it: analogous keeps hues near each other, triadic spaces them 120° apart, complementary uses the opposite hue, and monochromatic varies only lightness. Locking a swatch fixes it while the rest are recomputed, letting you converge on a palette you like.

  1. 1
    Set or generate a base

Start from a base color, or press Space (or the regenerate button) to roll a fresh palette.

  2. 2
    Choose a harmony rule

Switch between analogous, monochromatic, triadic, complementary, split-complementary or random to change the relationship between swatches.

  3. 3
    Lock and refine

Click the lock on colors you want to keep, then regenerate so only the unlocked swatches change.

  4. 4
    Export

Copy the palette as CSS variables, JSON or an array, download a PNG, or share the URL.

Frequently asked

How do I make a color palette that looks good?
Start from one base color you like and use a harmony rule (analogous or triadic are forgiving), then lock the strongest swatch and regenerate the rest until the set feels balanced.
How many colors should a palette have?
Five is a practical default: one or two dominant colors, a couple of supporting tones and an accent. This tool builds five-color palettes for that reason.
Can I export the palette to my project?
Yes — export as CSS custom properties, a JSON object, a plain array, a PNG image or a shareable link.
What does locking a color do?
A locked swatch is preserved when you regenerate, so you can keep the colors you love while exploring new options for the others.
